ICU Med­ical is an Amer­i­can med­ical com­pa­ny based in San Clemente, Cal­i­for­nia. It was found­ed in 1984 by George Lopez. From the out­set, the com­pa­ny has focused on devel­op­ing and imple­ment­ing inno­v­a­tive med­ical equip­ment in the field of vas­cu­lar ther­a­py.

The history of the creation of safe medical equipment by ICU Medical

The impe­tus for found­ing the com­pa­ny was an inci­dent expe­ri­enced by its founder. George Lopez, a licensed internist, lost a patient after an acci­den­tal dis­con­nec­tion of an intra­venous infu­sion deliv­er­ing life-sav­ing med­ica­tion. This prompt­ed him to estab­lish his own com­pa­ny focused on pro­duc­ing safe med­ical equip­ment. The first prod­uct was the Click­Lock, which con­sist­ed of a nee­dle and a closed hous­ing. This design pre­vent­ed acci­den­tal dis­con­nec­tion of the line, sig­nif­i­cant­ly enhanc­ing patient safe­ty.
